Origins of the dance band

The Carl Dominic Dance Band is a 5 to 9 piece function band supplying live music to the wedding and corporate markets. The band is a self-contained ensemble with its own P.A. system and lighting rig. Boasting a vast pad ranging from 1920s Traditional Jazz to new millennia popular music; including, 1930/40 standards, Ballroom, 1950s pre-Rock 'n' Roll, Rock 'n' Roll, Mainstream Jazz, 60s mainstream pop, Motown, Soul, R 'n' B, Reggae, Country music, Ballads, 70s Rock and Disco dance music, 80s new romanticism and 90s independent pop and rock. The musicians have been schooled in one of the UK's leading Music Colleges, Universities, or the Military. They have extensive experience as professionals and are competent reading musicians. The band uses music on stage. The Carl Dominic Dance Band is ideal for weddings, parties, corporate events and anniversaries, or any event that may require live music.

To the five principle seats featured below you have the option of adding additional instruments to make a larger ensemble: Trumpet, Saxaphone, Trombone and Electric Guitar.

Carl is the Managing Director, Musical Director and founder of Calfshire Productions Ltd; acting as bass player, arranger and band leader to The Carl Dominic Dance Band. He studied Bass at the Rock School in London, going on to study Jazz, Contemporary and Popular Music at the City Of Leeds College Of Music for three years.

He also holds a BA (Hon), awarded by Reading University. Carl has M.D'd musicals and revues at University and was Musical Director for the Drama Society (RUDS). Carl has worked, since his teens, in many dance/cover/original bands, Big Bands, Dixieland Jazz Bands and pantomime.

In addition to running the company, he teaches Music for The Wiltshire Music Service in schools in and around Wiltshire.

Amanda is a strong vocalist with a distinctive soulful, jazzy voice which is instantly recognisable. She has a wealth of experience of performing live at venues worldwide including The Grand Hyatt Hotel Singapore, Glastonbury Festival, Phoenix Festival, Mezzos, The Jazz Café and The Forum to name just a few. She has supported acts including Tower of Power, Finlay Quaye, Portishead and Jason Robello and worked on a number of live and studio projects including numerous sessions for TV and Radio. Most famously she co-wrote and sang the theme of BBC's Fame Academy and is also the voice of Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway.

Amanda thrives on the exciting dynamic of a responsive live situation, engaging warmly with her audiences wherever she appears.

Her repertoire comprises numerous tunes from Mainstream Pop, Rock, Soul, Jazz, and Disco through to Gospel & Funk.

David
studied A level Music and passed grade 8 piano and Theory of Music. Leaving school he joined the Royal Marines Band Service playing Piano, Cello, Trumpet and Cornet. His duties included playing for official functions such as The Royal Tournament, Horseguards Parade; major British events including FA Cup finals, Horseracing, Cricket and Rugby ceremonies. He has travelled the world playing in places like Hong Kong, Washington DC, Portland, for official UK Government and Royalty visits. David served in the Royal Marines for seven years. After leaving the Royal Marines he spent a year with various showbands, including backing "The Supremes" on a UK tour. Followed by a three year stint on Cruiseships such as the Royal Princess for Princess Cruises and the Sundream for Sun Cruises.

Ian is a multi-instrumentalist; doubling on flute, clarinet, and specialising in the saxophone family. He regularly performs on tenor saxophone with The Carl Dominic Dance Band. He has been with the band since its inception, enhancing the ensemble with his rich, powerful sound. Proficient in all styles of jazz from traditional to funk. Ian studied at Salford University reading music and is now a professional musician. He has performed on live radio, toured with musical productions. The Montreaux and the Brecon jazz festivals are among his credits.

Julian has played the Drum Kit from the age of 11 years, performing with the Berkshire Youth Jazz Orchestra. With BYJO he played at the Montreaux & Crawley Jazz festivals developing his craft. He has toured professionally in Europe and Asia and was signed to Dave Stewart's Label 'Anxious'. After his contract ended he began teaching the Drums privately and is now a full time Drum Kit tutor at various schools in and around Berkshire. Since 1992 he has taken workshops and 'drum tech' clinics, notably for the BBC's Live Music Festival in 2000. When not engaged with the band he is called on to perform for Panto and musicals.

Karen is a natural talent with a very wide range and an identifiable style. She brings to the band her distinctive character which is manifest through her voice and technical virtuosity. With an impressive Set List covering eight decades at her command, which includes Jazz, Swing, Country & Western, Soft Rock, Traditional Irish, Scottish music, along with an ever increasing number of Motown and chart hits from the 60's onwards, she lifts every event with her warm, gentle charisma. Karen has worked on the cabaret scene in Gran Canaria, where she was voted 'Solo Artist Of The Year' by a radio station.

The Carl Dominic Dance Band also employs many other musicians of similar calibre who, due to illness, holidays or general availability, often act as deputies (or additional members to the band) on some of the gigs for the five ensemble members pictured above. The band leader reserves the right to substitute any member under any conditions.
